'It was not Biketoberfest as we have known in the past': Daytona Beach's renowned biker festival ends on a mellow note

DAYTONA BEACH – Seven months into the coronavirus pandemic in Florida, where more than 16,100 people have died and more than 755,000 have been infected, smaller than normal crowds still turned up for the calm end of Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach.

Engines still roared on Main Street and bikers still downed drinks at outdoor bars, but the renowned event was much less thunderous on Sunday than in previous years, which had long been known for its congested traffic.

Phaedra Lee, manager of Main Street Station, noted that the open-air garage bar reopened about two weeks before Biketoberfest was set to commence, which made her somewhat nervous about whether she would have enough staff members to serve the crowds. Still, she was excited to see customers support the bar that had been shuttered for seven months.

"We were able to put on a great event," Lee said. "We were really happy that we had staff willing to work and customers wanting to come and enjoy the venue."
